“How do I Start an Online Business?” is a Question I often get asked… So here’s how!

Starting an online business of any kind can be daunting to say the least.





However it doesn't have to be if you have patience, the correct attitude and are not of the opinion that you will "Get rich overnight" because that's not going to happen. PERIOD.





Below I have listed 4 key points that I believe are paramount to starting an online business.





1) The correct mindset


2) Simple web skills


3) Understanding autoresponders


4) Generate traffic






The correct mindset





To have the correct mindset you must have the patience to wait sometimes up to a year for you to make any REAL money online.





You must also possess unbreakable desire and determination because things won't always go according to plan. Trust me you WILL have setbacks and make the wrong decisions.





However, it's how you react to these setbacks that will determine whether or not you become a successful internet marketer. I take my inspiration from the poem "Don't quit". I suggest you Google it because it really has been an inspiration to me.






Simple web skills





Whenever I get asked the question "How do I start an online business" I always stress the importance of learning simple web skills.





These skills can be broken down as follows:





Creating a website - Believe it or not building your own website is not as difficult (nor as expensive) as you may think.





The first thing you will need to consider is what you would like to call your website. This will be known as your websites' domain name.





You will then need to download and install a "Web Editor" and understand how it works..... Basically, a Web Editor enables you to build your website on your home computer.





Thirdly you will need to obtain an ftp client (Ftp stands for File Transfer Protocol ). An ftp client uploads all your website files from your web editor to your hosting company.)





Finally you will need a hosting account (Your host is responsible for connecting your website to the Internet.)






Understanding autoresponders





Nowadays building a list of potential customers is extremely important for any internet business. You build your list by offering "Something of value" for free.





So to get this free gift the potential customer has to sign up to your list and they do this through "An opt in" form on your website.





An Autoresponder is responsible for providing you with this opt in form and is also responsible for sending out emails to your list at set times (Weekly , monthly etc...).





These emails will usually contain a link to any special offers you may have but can also contain helpful tips and advice.






Generate traffic





Getting lots of traffic to your website is the lifeblood of any business for without traffic you can't build your list and without your list you can't make money!





There are many ways to generate traffic to your website (Much too many to list in this article). However, here are some of my favorite methods:





Forum Marketing - Join some forums within your niche and try to contribute at least once a day to discussions (Be sure to have a link to your website at the bottom of your posts)





Email Signatures - Create an email signature with a link to your website on every you send.





Article writing - Try to write 2-3 articles a week on subjects within your niche and send them to the various article directories. Remember to provide a link to your website at the bottom of every article.





Post an ad on classified ad websites - Sites such as Craigslist, Backpage and Kijji are a great way of generating traffic to your website. Again remember to place a link to your website within the ad.





Google alerts - Probably my favorite traffic generating method.





Simply put Google Alerts are emails that are sent to anyone who signs up for the free alert service.





When signing up for the service you are asked to input the subject matter of your choice.





Google will then check regularly to see if there are any new results for your chosen subject and will then email you the website address, forum, or blog from where the results originated.





For example if my chosen subject (Or keyword) was "Starting a web business" then Google would email me all fresh searches that contain the those words.





You can then visit these sites and join in the discussion or leave a comment thus promoting your website.
