Making your own website may seem daunting and unattainable for some people. Believe me when I tell you it most certainly is not!
Below I have listed the items you will need, and also explain in everyday language the role these items have in making your website a reality!!
• A domain name
• A hosting account
• A Ftp Client
• A Web Editor
Your domain name
Your domain name is the address of your website and ideally should relate to the subject matter of your website.
It is the address that people use to find your website online by typing your websites details into their browsers' address bar.
Your domain name will cost you approx $10 per year and can be purchased online through companies called "Registrars".
A registrar will be able to tell you immediately if your proposed domain name is taken by someone else and will provide you with similar alternatives if it is.
Examples of good registrars are godaddy, enom.com or networksolutions.com
Your hosting account
The next thing on your list when making your own website will be to obtain a hosting account.
Hosting accounts are provided by hosting companies such as "Hostgator" or "One and one" (To name but a few).
However please also note that quite a few registrars (Where you purchased your domain)who also provide hosting.
Some people prefer this as "All their eggs are in one basket" and some like to shop around for better deals.
On average expect to pay $10.00 - $15.00 per month for your hosting account.
Your hosting company is responsible for connecting your website to the internet through large, powerful computers known as servers.
But how does all your website info get to your hosting company?
An FTP Client
Another piece of the puzzle when making your own website is an ftp client (Ftp stands for File Transfer Protocol).
An Ftp Client is a piece of software that's downloaded to your computer and is responsible for "uploading" all the files for your website from your computer at home to the servers at your hosting company.
There are many ftp clients to choose from such as "Filezilla" , "Bitkinex" and "Ftpvoyager".
My ftp client of choice is Filezilla simply because it's free and in my opinion extremely user friendly.
A Web Editor
A Web Editor is an essential piece of downloadable software needed for making your own website.
Basically, a Web Editor enables the user to create and modify web pages on their home computer before eventually uploading them through their Ftp Client to their hosting company for publication on to the web.
There are many Web Editors available to purchase such as"Dreamweaver" and "Microsoft expression".
However, there are also free Web Editors out there that are every bit as good.
"Kompozer" and "Pagebreeze" are excellent examples of free Web Editors. Both will give you fantastic results and are also user friendly.
